Two hands, each doing something different, timed with each other, and most adults stop noticing it. What Bilateral Coordination Actually Is

The Geoboard: A Clinical Tool in Plain Sight

One of the tools occupational therapists reach for most often to build bilateral coordination looks almost too simple: a wooden board studded with pegs, with rubber bands stretched between them to form shapes. It earns its place for good reason.

Stretching a band between two pegs asks for a lot at once: one hand holds while the other stretches, both thumbs and forefingers coordinate together, the child plans where the band will land, and then checks the result against a task card or their own mental picture of it.

At the simplest level, one band, two pegs, a straight line, children as young as eighteen months can manage it. Push further and you get complex geometric figures that call for real planning and sharp bilateral control. That range is what makes the geoboard useful from toddlerhood well into the school years.

Task cards add another layer: translating a flat, printed pattern into a physical, three-dimensional motor sequence. That translation is itself a bilateral coordination task, and a solid predictor of reading and math readiness down the line.

Supporting Bilateral Development at Home

Parents don't need a therapist's referral to start working on this. A handful of everyday activities, scaled to age, do the job well.

Toddlers (12–24 months): stacking and unstacking cups, moving objects between containers, simple two-handed shape sorters.

Ages 2–4: beginner geoboard work, pouring water between cups, tearing paper, simple lacing boards, sorting tasks that need both hands.

Ages 4–6: scissors, threading, construction toys, intermediate geoboard patterns, pre-writing tools that require holding the page steady.

The key is consistency: daily practice with something slightly past a child's comfort zone, hard enough to take effort, easy enough that they succeed.

Bilateral coordination underlies academic learning, physical independence, and a good part of social participation, not some niche developmental extra. It's built through early experience, and it responds well to purposeful practice, often through materials already sitting in a well-stocked playroom.

When a child stretches a rubber band between two pegs, they're wiring up the neuromotor infrastructure that will carry them through the classroom, the sports field, and the writing desk for years afterward.
