Level 1 of the Nikitin system, and the easiest entry point into more than 50 years of puzzle design. Children compose 12 squares from simple geometric pieces, triangles and rectangles, with combinations easy enough for children from around 18 months to manage on their own. That's the point: enough challenge to matter, not so much that they give up.
It's a familiar sight in occupational therapy, speech therapy, and special education settings across Europe and Asia, because it builds spatial reasoning and fine motor precision without needing explanation from an adult.
What it builds:
- Spatial reasoning and geometric thinking
- Fine motor precision and hand-eye coordination
- Logical problem-solving through trial and error
- Sustained concentration and task persistence
- Visual-spatial processing
Often used with: children with developmental delays · ASD · fine motor difficulties · low muscle tone · sensory processing differences
In the box: 2 wooden tablets with recessed squares · 12 cut squares (6×6 cm)
Material: natural wood, non-toxic | Age: 18 months+ | Part 1 of 3
In use across Russia, Germany, Japan, and the rest of Europe for over 50 years.
This is a gift calibrated for young children: easy enough to succeed at early on, interesting enough that they keep coming back. Start here and collect all three levels as your child grows, a long-term puzzle series rather than a one-off present.
